What is Ayushya Suktam?

Ayushya Suktam is a collection of Vedic mantras found in the Rigveda and other Vedic texts. The term “Ayushya” means “related to life” or “longevity,” and “Suktam” refers to a well-spoken or auspicious hymn. Thus, Ayushya Suktam is a prayer for a long, healthy, and prosperous life. It is often chanted during rituals, yajnas (fire ceremonies), and personal prayers to seek the blessings of the divine for a life free from diseases and obstacles.

The Essence of Ayushya Suktam

The Ayushya Suktam is a profound hymn that invokes various deities, including Agni (Fire God), Vishnu (The Preserver), Rudra (A form of Shiva), and others, to bestow longevity and vitality. It emphasizes the importance of prana (life force), ojas (vital energy), and tejas (radiance) in maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life.

The hymn also highlights the role of ghrita (clarified butter or ghee) in rituals, symbolizing purity and nourishment. By offering ghee into the sacred fire, devotees seek to purify their bodies and minds, thereby enhancing their life force.
