Surya Suktam is a Vedic hymn dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God). Significance of Surya Suktam

1. Surya as the Source of Life:

In Hindu scriptures, the Sun is worshiped as a deity who sustains life on Earth. The Rigveda and Yajurveda contain numerous references to Surya as the giver of light, knowledge, and power. The Gayatri Mantra, one of the most sacred Vedic chants, is also dedicated to Surya.

dū̠rē̠dṛśē̍ dē̠vajā̍tāya kē̠tavē̍ di̠vaspu̠trāya̠ sū̠ryā̍ya śaṃsata ॥ 1

sā mā̍ sa̠tyōkti̠ḥ pari̍ pātu vi̠śvatō̠ dyāvā̍ cha̠ yatra̍ ta̠tana̠nnahā̍ni cha ।
viśva̍ma̠nyanni vi̍śatē̠ yadēja̍ti vi̠śvāhāpō̍ vi̠śvāhōdē̍ti̠ sūrya̍ḥ ॥ 2

na tē̠ adē̍vaḥ pra̠divō̠ ni vā̍satē̠ yadē̍ta̠śēbhi̍ḥ pata̠rai ra̍tha̠ryasi̍ ।

ta-nnō̠ dyāvā̍pṛthi̠vī tanna̠ āpa̠ indra̍-śśṛṇvantu ma̠rutō̠ hava̠ṃ vacha̍ḥ ।
mā śūnē̍ bhūma̠ sūrya̍sya sa̠ndṛśi̍ bha̠dra-ñjīva̍ntō jara̠ṇāma̍śīmahi ॥ 6

vi̠śvāhā̍ tvā su̠mana̍sa-ssu̠chakṣa̍saḥ pra̠jāva̍ntō anamī̠vā anā̍gasaḥ ।
u̠dyanta̍-ntvā mitramahō di̠vēdi̍vē̠ jyōgjī̠vāḥ prati̍ paśyēma sūrya ॥ 7

mahi̠ jyōti̠rbibhra̍ta-ntvā vichakṣaṇa̠ bhāsva̍nta̠-ñchakṣu̍ṣēchakṣuṣē̠ maya̍ḥ ।
ā̠rōha̍nta-mbṛha̠taḥ pāja̍sa̠spari̍ va̠ya-ñjī̠vāḥ prati̍ paśyēma sūrya ॥ 8

yasya̍ tē̠ viśvā̠ bhuva̍nāni kē̠tunā̠ pra chēra̍tē̠ ni cha̍ vi̠śantē̍ a̠ktubhi̍ḥ ।
