Achyutam Keshavam Lyrics in English

Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram,
Ram Narayanam Janki Vallabham ।
Kaun Kehte Hai Bhagwan Aate Nahi,
Tum Meera Ke Jaise Bulate Nahi ।

Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram,
Ram Narayanam Janki Vallabham ।

Kaun Kehte Hai Bhawan Khate Nahi,
Ber Shabri Ke Jaise Khilate Nahi ।

Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram,
Ram Narayanam Janki Vallabham ।

Kaun Kehte Hai Bhagwan Sote Nahi,
Maa Yashoda Ke Jaise Sulate Nahi ।

Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram,
Ram Narayanam Janki Vallabham ।

Kaun Kehte Hai Bhagwan Nachte Nahi,
Gopiyo Ke Jaise Tum Nachate Nahi ।

Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram,
Ram Narayanam Janki Vallabham ।

Naam Japte Chalo Kaam Karte Chalo,
Har Samay Krishna Ka Naam Dharte Chalo ।

Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram,
Ram Narayanam Janki Vallabham ।

Yaad Aayegi Unko Kabhi Na Kabhi,
Krishna Darshan to Denge Kabhi Na Kabhi ।

Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram,
Ram Narayanam Janki Vallabham ।

Origins and Composition

Achyutam Keshavam draws its roots from the Achyutashtakam, an eight-verse Sanskrit hymn composed by the revered 8th-century philosopher and saint Adi Shankaracharya. The original Achyutashtakam is a poetic tribute to Lord Vishnu, celebrating his infallible nature and divine attributes through names like Achyuta (the infallible one), Keshava (slayer of the demon Keshi), and Narayana (the eternal refuge). The Hindi version, popularized as a bhajan, adapts the first verse of this stotra and adds verses that reflect Krishna’s playful and compassionate persona, making it more accessible to contemporary devotees.

While the Sanskrit hymn is a structured prayer, the Hindi bhajan often titled Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram weaves in a conversational tone, questioning why the Lord seems distant and emphasizing that true devotion can summon His presence. This adaptation has been sung by artists like Vikram Hazra, Anup Jalota, Shreya Ghoshal, and, more recently, Sonu Nigam in the 2024 film Maharaj, each rendition adding a unique flavor to its enduring appeal.

Spiritual Significance

Achyutam Keshavam transcends mere melody; it’s a call to deepen one’s devotion. The bhajan suggests that the perceived absence of God stems not from His indifference but from the devotee’s lack of heartfelt connection. By invoking stories of Meera, Shabri, Yashoda, and the gopis, it reminds listeners that Krishna is accessible to all who approach Him with sincerity. This message aligns with the Bhakti movement’s core tenet: love and surrender outweigh dogma.

The repetition of Krishna’s names serves as a meditative practice, encouraging devotees to “Naam japte chalo, kaam karte chalo” (chant His name while you work). This practical spirituality integrates faith into daily life, promising that “Krishna darshan to denge kabhi na kabhi” (Krishna will surely grant His vision someday).

Why It Endures

Achyutam Keshavam endures because it speaks to universal human longing for connection, love, and divine presence. Its simple yet profound lyrics make it accessible to all ages, while its melody evokes a sense of peace and joy. During festivals like Janmashtami, it fills temples and homes with devotion, but its appeal isn’t confined to special occasions it’s a song for every day, a reminder that the divine is never far.
