Vishnu Puran
The Vishnu Puran is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas in Hinduism. It is considered one of the most important Puranic texts dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe. This scripture provides detailed information about cosmology, mythology, genealogy, dharma (duty), and legends related to Lord Vishnu and his avatars.

Origin and Composition of Vishnu Puran
The Vishnu Puran is believed to have been composed between 3rd and 5th century CE, though some scholars suggest it may have been written earlier. It is traditionally attributed to the sage Parashara, the father of Ved Vyasa. The text is written in Sanskrit and consists of around 23,000 verses divided into six parts.
Structure of Vishnu Puran
The Vishnu Puran is divided into six books (amsas), each dealing with different aspects of creation, history, and spiritual teachings.
1. First Amsa (Book) – Cosmology and Creation
- Describes the creation of the universe by Lord Vishnu.
- The concept of the Trimurti – Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver), and Shiva (destroyer).
- Explains the cyclical nature of time (Yugas – Satya, Treta, Dwapara, and Kali).
- Details about the origin of Earth, heaven, and various celestial beings.
2. Second Amsa – Earthly Creation and Kings
- Discusses the creation of various living beings, including gods, humans, and demons.
- Genealogy of various dynasties, especially the Solar (Suryavansh) and Lunar (Chandravansh) dynasties.
- Description of various historical and mythological kings.
3. Third Amsa – Geography of the Universe
- Detailed description of the universe, including the seven continents (Sapta Dweepas) and oceans.
- Description of Mount Meru, the center of the universe.
- Information about different planetary systems, including the Sun, Moon, and stars.
4. Fourth Amsa – Stories of Lord Vishnu and Devotion
- Narrates the ten main avatars of Lord Vishnu (Dashavatara), including:
- Matsya (Fish)

- Narasimha (Lion-man)
- Vamana (Dwarf)
- Parashurama

5. Fifth Amsa – Life of Lord Krishna
- This book is dedicated to the life and divine plays (Leelas) of Lord Krishna.
- Describes Krishna’s birth, childhood miracles, victory over demons like Kansa and Jarasandha, and his role in the Mahabharata.
- Explanation of Krishna’s teachings on Dharma and righteousness.
6. Sixth Amsa – End of Time (Kali Yuga) and Liberation
- Describes the current age (Kali Yuga), its characteristics, and moral decline.
- Prophecies about the future destruction of the universe and the arrival of Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu.
- Explanation of Moksha (liberation) and the ultimate goal of human life.
